Looks good to me! Really good! However…
These women really are breaking the law! 4 U.S.C. § 1 (Chapter 1 of Title 4 of the United States Code) is the law I am referring to, and it is no new or arbitrary law, nor is it one that should be repealed (though a little amending might be in order… some of it is a bit dated).
The Flag Code of the United States specifically states: “The flag should not be used as “wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery“, or for covering a speaker’s desk, draping a platform, or for any decoration in general (exception for coffins). Bunting of blue, white and red stripes is available for these purposes. The blue stripe of the bunting should be on the top.” (
Note that the law doesn’t actually say that wearing something that incorporates flag imagery or flag motifs is prohibited, but hopefully you can see how it can be interpreted as to make flag-colored bikinis illegal. The law is vague, sounding specific to instances such as Jeremy in the Pearl Jam video by the same name.
This Code also states, “The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, firefighters, police officers, and members of patriotic organizations.”
Similarly, be aware of, “The flag should never be used for any advertising purpose. (Shame on you, Walmart…) It should not be embroidered, printed, or otherwise impressed on such articles as cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, boxes, or anything intended to be discarded after temporary use. Advertising signs should not be attached to the staff or halyard.”
Respect the flag… do not worship it, but indeed respect it. Also, familiarize yourself with the law, friends. Whether you agree with it or not, in these troubling times there are many ways and means that The Man could use as a ‘gotcha’… stay safe and alert.
