From “Miss USA” to his menswear collection at Macy’s, Trump’s brands are being pulled from both media and retail outlets. It would seem that the sudden rash of rats jumping from the Trump liner smell smoke in the form of the man’s seemingly racist comments about immigrants and Mexicans in particular. What did he say?
According to Reuters, the comments in question were aired Thursday in response to the shooting of Kathryn Steinle on San Francisco’s Pier 14 on Wednesday. The suspect has been identified as a Mexican male who has many varied felonies, has been deported several times, and returns again and again as an illegal immigrant to America. In reference to this tragedy, Trump stated, “This senseless and totally preventable act of violence committed by an illegal immigrant is yet another example of why we must secure our border immediately,” and further added, “This is an absolutely disgraceful situation and I am the only one that can fix it. Nobody else has the guts to even talk about it…”Trump has been known for being an outspoken proponent of Free Speech, but many wonder if statements such as these go too far. The real question is whether there is such a thing as “too far” in Free Speech. Americans are afforded the right to say whatever they wish, being mindful that the price of Free Speech is someone else’s right to disagree with you. Certainly this has and will likely continue to make the Latino vote in America look elsewhere, but I doubt “The Don” will be hurting much from such a pitiful display of media and retail rebellion.
