Yeah, yeah, we’ve all heard it… “I’m INNOCENT!” Riiiight. This is how complicated and abusive our legal system has gotten. Most States in the Union have what are called “Felony Murder” laws… which allow a prosecutor to get someone sentenced for murder without killing anyone. Blake Layman and his friends, the “Elkhart Four” are victims of these laws. They are indeed guilty of crimes… breaking and entering, burglary, maybe even destruction of property… but not murder. Does this teen deserve to stay in jail for 55 years because someone shot his friend?
UPDATE: The Indiana Supreme Court reviewed this decision and in February 2015, decided that the sentences were “inappropriate” for three of the “Elkhart Four”… Blake was among those.
