Few songs have ever truly defined what it means to be American. The National Anthem is one, America the Beautiful is another, but those are a couple centuries old, right? Have we lost our touch… or have we lost our way? Since 1972, Don McLean’s cryptic poem “American Pie” has been one of those classic anthems that has defined American culture for at least two generations. Since it’s debut, people have speculated about whom the song is about… from John Kennedy to Robert Kennedy to revolutionary heroes and even America itself. Some idiots have even suggested it was a creepy prediction of the John Lennon assassination. When the aging singer sold his original manuscript for the song, he finally stated once and for all time who the song is truly about. He claims that, in fact, he was thinking of Buddy Holly when he wrote it.
