We often walk by homeless people and go out of our way to NOT make eye contact. If we do, we fear, they may ask us for money- to buy drugs or alcohol, we believe.
Everyone has their own story, and a news reporter covering the storms in California recently learned one such sad story from a homeless man.
The reporter saw the man, Freddie Aguilar, and asked him why he was homeless. His answer was very heartbreaking, and had NOTHING to do with drugs OR alcohol. Actually, his hard times came about by the death of his girl.
From media outlet Lift:
“When she was sick, I wasn’t going to leave her in the hospital for two months battling the disease that she had,” he tells Silva. “I lost everything because of her and I didn’t care.”
“I would have sold my soul to the devil for her, that’s how much I loved her. Her name was Flor Marlene Bryant. When you lose material things, it’s just material things but when you lose somebody you love, it hurts more than anything.”
Freddie’s story goes to show that we should not be so quick to judge when we see people down on their fortunes.
