The crew of the Maiken was sailing through the South Pacific when they saw a strange discoloration in the water. The sailed towards the large, shadowy area and when they finally realized what it was, they barely made it out.
At first they thought it was a sandbar, but realized it was something else.
An unbelievably huge amount of pumice stone was floating on the surface of the water.
They directed the yacht towards the it to get a closer look.
It looked like a beach in the middle of the ocean!
They decided to sail through it, leaving a break in the stone.
The field of stone was growing quickly. The crew had an uneasy feeling and increased their speed until they were a safe distance away.
They heard a low rumbling and when they looked back, saw water bubbling on the surface.
The pumice stone was from an underwater volcano that was erupting at the time they were there!
The dropped the anchor to stay and watch this spectacular event. The sky filled with smoke.
And as the smoke cleared, there was something on the water’s surface, at the horizon.
They couldn’t believe what they were seeing, land had appeared out of the water. They had just seen the birth of an island!
They sailed closer to make sure that what they were seeing was real.
It’s one of the rarest events imaginable.
Their timing was incredibly lucky, not only to witness this birth but to have escaped being caught in the violent eruption.
