For the longest time throughout post WWII history, the secret Presidential bunker to which the Commander in Chief and his staff would be secreted in the event of a nuclear war was located beneath the posh resort of The Greenbrier, located in Lewisburg, West Virginia. It was the perfect location, as the President and his crew could be swept away there from D.C. in Marine One in less than an hour. It was safely guarded by the hills of West Virginia, and at the time, indestructible and completely defensible against all armaments of the time. At the end of the cold war, this information was made public and is no longer a secret.
However, after the attacks of September 11, 2001, a new location was needed, and it appears our nation’s leadership once again turned their eyes to the mountain state.
From an article published on National Defense.com from way back in 2001:
If you drive on West Virginia’s Interstate-77, halfway between Charleston and Beckley, and blink one too many times, you may miss it. But local politicians and proponents of U.S. homeland defense know it’s there—the West Virginia Memorial Tunnel. The tunnel is now a training site for local, state and federal agencies preparing to handle terrorist attacks with weapons of mass destruction.
The tunnel, built in 1953 as part of the West Virginia Turnpike, was permanently closed when I-77 opened between Beckley and Charleston in 1987. The Federal Highway Administration used the facility in the mid-1990s as a test facility for ventilation of smoke from tunnel fires. Four years ago, the tunnel became a storage site for the West Virginia Turnpike.
To turn the tunnel into a training facility, Congress appropriated $5 million in fiscal 2001, and $3 million in 2000. One of the program’s biggest supporters is Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va….
In recent months, with the buildup toward Operation Jade Helm, a joint military ‘training exercise’ that is scheduled to start 15 July and run for two months, folks in the area have noticed an increase in military activity around the tunnel, and allegedly, the area of and surrounding the tunnel has been restricted to civilians.
The online watchdog group Operation Jade Helm And Beyond received the following, anonymous message recently from a Patriot living in the area:
I see military humvees around it a lot. It used to be the highway. The other side is blocked up. Very strange area…
…But last couple years it’s been military occupied. ..and the area around it
Was it truly the intentions of the Government to use the tunnel for simply terrorist attack purposes, and only recently decided to use it as a secret bunker? Or have they been digging and building underground for these past 14 years, unbeknownst to the people, planning something more diabolical the whole time?
