Danny Chasteen and Susan Rick won $250,000.00 last month in the lottery but that’s where their luck ended. Chasteen received a call Monday night and effectively received an IOU! Chasteen was told “we cannot pay your lottery winnings out because of Illinois’ budget”. Well, actually, it’s because of the lack of a budget.
Wgntv.com is reporting that the lack of a budget by lawmakers is forcing the state to issue IOUs to lottery winners over $25,000.00 and the following is a statement from the Illinois Lottery:
“Due to the ongoing budget situation is Springfield, some lottery winner payments have been delayed. All winners will be paid in full as soon as the Lottery and the Illinois Comptroller have the legislative authority to do so. Currently, winners may claim prizes under $600.00 at any of our 8,000 retail locations, and prizes under $25,000.00 may be claimed at any Lottery claims center, found at illinoislottery.com.”
Rick told the Chicago Tribune, via Reboot Illinois:
“You know what’s funny? If we owed the state money they’d come take it and they don’t care whether we had a roof over our head,” Rick said. “Our budget wouldn’t be a factor. You can’t say (to the state) ‘Can you wait until I get my budget under control?'”
Out of control government at it’s finest. You may want to skip buying lottery tickets in Illinois for a while.
