Police responded Wednesday night to a mass shooting at a church in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, multiple media outlets reported.
It was not immediately clear how many individuals were injured.
The Charleston Police Department tweeted that the incident at Bethel AME Church occurred at approximately 9 p.m.
The gunman was still at large and described as a white male, approximately 21 years of age.
Several ambulances, as well as the FBI, could be seen on the scene.
Reporters were pushed away from the scene after a bomb threat was called in nearby, WCSC-TV reported.
The Emmanuel AME church is a historic African-American church that traces its roots to 1816, when several churches split from Charleston’s Methodist Episcopal church.
One of its founders, Denmark Vesey, tried to organize a slave revolt in 1822. He was caught, and white landowners had his church burned in revenge. Parishioners worshipped underground until after the Civil War.
