Residents in New Jersey and Long Island were reporting explosions, buildings shaking and the ground trembling Thursday afternoon. Some Jersey residents said they felt four tremors about 10 minutes apart, although some said they felt more with each getting stronger.
Suffolk and Ocean County Sheriff’s Offices were receiving an overwhelming number of calls and the State Police said they were not reporting and seismic blasts anywhere in New Jersey. The U.S. Geological Survey said there was no earthquake activity in that area, then blamed it on sonic booms, but an official for Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst told a local news station they didn’t hold any exercises that would’ve caused a sonic boom.
A YouTuber uploaded a video of their shaking car and another had open cabinets, broken dishes and things having fallen off the walls. And just a few comments from twitter this afternoon,
“Pretty sure I just felt an earthquake in nj,” champagnechelley @rachelrivera tweeted just before 2 p.m.
“Reports of loud boom followed by shaking along New Jersey shoreline,” added Greg [email protected].
But “LeighLeigh” had another theory.
“No that wasn’t an #Earthquake in New Jersey…it was just governor Chris Christie shaking down Dunkin Donuts,” she wrote on Twitter.
