This sea creature looks like a fictional being straight out of a sci-fi movie and it isn’t hard to believe they could’ve been left behind by a past alien society. They’re hollow and can grow to the size of a sperm whale with the longest recorded being 98 feet. If you’re brave enough to go near them, they’ll glow, just don’t swim through the opening into their tunnel, you may not get back out.
What is this alien-like creature? It’s called a Pyrosome. They’re rarely encountered, sometimes called the unicorn of the sea, but scientists think our oceans are full of them and Pyrosomes are mostly harmless (mostly??).
Pyrosomes might look like giant sea worms, but they’re actually hollow on the inside. And while they appear to be a single organism, they are colonies of individual creatures that have banded together for a common purpose. Exactly how these massive colonies coordinate their behavior is still being studied, but researchers suspect they communicate through light signaling.
Sounds other-worldly to me…
